In October 2017, a visit was made to the French city of Strasbourg to see the Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp. The camp is located in the Vosges Mountains, an hour west of the city. Between 1941 and 1944, an estimated 52,000 prisoners, many from resistance movements in German-occupied territories, were held there.
Natzweiler-Struthof served as a labor and transit camp, and later as a place of execution. Brutal labor and malnutrition led to an estimated 22,000 deaths at the main camp and its subcamps. The current presence of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg creates a stark juxtaposition with this history. This theme is explored in the 2021 book, Strasbourg, which was printed on a riso machine with black paper and gray inks.
