Near the former Grini prison camp—which is now Ila Detention and Security Prison—there is a tall oak tree. During the war, this place was used as a smuggling point for messages in and out of the prison camp. Today, the giant oak quietly draws your attention to the fact that you are standing between the two places of execution, where a total of eight prisoners were shot in July 1944. This small patch of forest conceals a nearly forgotten history, now flanked by two golf courses and a shooting range.
To the sound of distant gunfire one Saturday morning, I begin my walk through the forest, trying to reconcile the horrors people inflict upon one another.
