Cities of the West, a travelogue that explores cities in Europe and on the U.S. East Coast from a different perspective, reflects a long-standing fascination with how Western urban spaces evolve like a palimpsest, constantly changing yet carrying layers of history. A peculiar sense of déjà vu arises as one travels, where newer building practices, gentrification, and the politicization of public spaces visibly distance us from history.
The predominance of franchise stores, forced social spaces, and alienating architecture in city centers often evoke a feeling of being both wanted and unwanted—an ambivalence sought to be visualized in this project. By intentionally making the location inseparable from one another, the viewer is encouraged to challenge their assumptions of public space. Are the cities we build truly meant for human existence?
